PHIL 343 - Philosophy of Science This course explores major questions in the philosophy of science, including the following. What distinguishes science from other forms of knowledge? Is the history of science a history of progress? To what extent is theory choice in science determined by evidence? What is objectivity—and is science objective? What is scientific explanation? What is a law of nature? What role do values play in scientific knowledge? What effect has science had on social values? Can categories such as race, sex, gender, or sexual orientation be scientifically meaningful? How should we understand the relationship between science and religion?
