SOAN 349 - Gender and the Body


This course critically examines gendered identity and inequality through the control, shaping, disciplining, representing, performance and the medical treatment of bodies. In this class we investigate the sources and consequences of gender role differences and gender inequality related to race, class, cultural groups. Particular attention will be paid to the gendered body through the life-course and in human rights, educational, workplace, political, and economic contexts. We will examine changing gender roles and types of inequalities as marked on the body and through the body. (Group I)
