SPAN 383 - Spanish Phonetics and Phonology


This upper level Spanish course, taught in Spanish, will focus on the phonetics and phonology of the Spanish language. Topics covered will include articulatory phonetics, Spanish phonology, the difference in phonetics and phonology, the differences in English and Spanish speech sounds, the phonetic and phonological variations that exist in the Spanish-speaking world, and the perception of speech sounds, particularly regarding the perception of a foreign accent. Students will also become familiar with Praat, an acoustic analysis software, learn to record themselves or others, and analyze the sound spectrograms of that recorded speech. Prerequisite: Any three of SPAN 226, 250, 310, or 350 or permission of instructor. Fall
