SPAN 382 - Spanish Linguistics

This course provides an introduction to linguistics (with a focus on Spanish and taught in Spanish) and covers the linguistic history of the Spanish language as well as some of its current dialectal variations. Students gain a better understanding of the linguistic evolutions of Latin into Spanish from the Roman invasion of the Iberian Peninsula to the current varieties of Spanish spoken today. They also learn about sociolinguistic research and write a sociolinguistic research proposal as a final paper. Students are expected to read and prepare for class discussion outside of class and are evaluated based on their class participation and performance on exams, quizzes, homework assignments, and final paper. Prerequisite: Any three of SPAN 226, 250, 310, or 350 or permission of instructor.
