CLAS 222 - Archaeology of Ancient Greece and Rome A survey of the material remains of ancient Greece and Rome, from the rise of Minoan Crete through the fall of the western Roman Empire in A.D. 476. The sculpture, painting, pottery, jewelry, religious objects, and great temples and monuments of the classical world will be studied closely. Particular attention will be paid to certain sites of immortal fate: the remains of the sanctuary of Demeter and her daughter Persephone at Eleusis near Athens; the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in the shadow of Vesuvius; and the archaeological record of Roman Britain (Hadrian’s Wall) and Roman Africa and Egypt may all be examined in detail.
