FREN 379 - Civilization of the Francophone World 1.00
An integrated study of the civilizations and language of French-speaking areas outside metropolitan France, including North and Sub-Saharan Africa, the Antilles, and Canada. Special attention is given to the evaluation of art, literature, the oral tradition, and political developments (including colonialism and its aftermath) reflected in selected texts. From readings and discussion emerge such themes as written and popular language, dilemmas posed by modernization and official culture, and struggles for Black, Moslem, Caribbean and Quebecois identity, authenticity, cultural recognition, and independence. Prerequisite: 350 or 351 or permission of instructor. (Group III) Diversity
