WGS 499 E - Senior Seminar: Asian and Arab Women Writers

Examination of literary, cinematic and theoretical works by women of color from around the world in the context of non-western and indigenous feminisms. Readings, slides and films will be used as a basis of discussions about the distinctions between western mainstream feminism and other contemporary and postcolonial positions. We will look at the various intersections between gender and the politics of race, class, ethnicity and religion. Works to be studied include essays, films and works of fiction from the following nations: Mexico, India, Pakistan, Iran, China and the US. Recommended for seniors with previous experience in upper-level courses in Women’s and Gender Studies, Humanities, English, or Philosophy and/or those who are prepared to undertake relatively sophisticated approaches to works of fiction and theory.
