This course examines understanding of gendered categories, norms, roles, and experiences across cultures. Special attention is given to continually changing cultural formulations of femininities, masculinities, non-binary identities, and multiple-gendered categories related to sexuality within cultures. How these identities are embedded in cultural meaning, local and global histories, and structures of power is a focal point of this class. Ethnographic data, case studies, art work, film, and interviewing are used as a way to locate meaning and trace ethnocentric, racist, sexist, and neocolonialist structures. (Group I)
