SOAN 359 - Social Inequality

With a focus on social class, this course invites us to consider: is the American Dream alive or dead? How does inequality affect groups and individuals? How much inequality inspires action and what can we do about poverty? We will learn about the realities of poverty, working class culture, how class affects college life, how and why inequality persists over time, and examples of programs and societies that have successfully reduced levels of economic inequality. Throughout the course, we examine how class inequality intersects with race and gender. Students will also participate in a community-based service learning project to gain a deeper understanding of inequality and learn about possible solutions. Based on student interests, the Office of Service Learning will help connect students with community partners in an internship-like experience (most options will be in-person but virtual options will also be available). Through this real-world project, students will examine course themes, reflect on their experiences, and develop career-oriented skills for making the world a better place. This course is taught approximately every other year.
