WGS 310 C - Subversive Subjects: Sex and Gender in Literature

This special topics course explores subversive gender identities and sexualities in literature. Texts range from ancient Greek lyric poetry to the postmodern graphic novel. The course investigates how gender and sexuality are shaped by social, political and economic forces and also how writers have imagined subjects resisting those forces. Authors and texts include poetry of Sappho, Lysistrata by Aristophanes, As You Like It by William Shakespeare, short stories by Charlotte Perkins-Gilman, The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon, Jealousy by Alain Robbe-Grillet, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel, and The Crying Game (film). Coursework includes a prospectus, a final paper, two exams, occasional quizzes, and regular classroom participation. Writing Option. (Group I)
