COMM 111 - Mass Media History

1.00

A course examining the technological advances and paradigm shifts in  human communication from antiquity to the contemporary digital landscape. Beginning with ancient forms of communication and ending in the present with emerging digital platforms,  emphasis will be placed on the evolution of media in parallel with social, cultural, and political developments from a multicultural and global perspective. Themes explored include the relationship between media and culture, the role of regulation in the shaping of how the media develop, and the role of the media in shaping and maintaining the public sphere. The value of technological innovations in the communication landscape is weighed against systems of control over the dissemination of information and unintended consequences of innovation in communication technologies are explored.
