GEOG 499 - Justice and the Environment 1.00
Using geography’s frameworks of the environment, Justice and the Environment introduces students to the complexities of justice from environmental, cultural, and material perspectives. Through readings, documentary and cinematic film, and popular culture, we source case studies that center the particularities of justice. Case studies about renewable energy highlight economic inequality that is at the heart of environmental sustainability. Another study shows the environmental devastation that results from the noble humanitarian work of clearing landmines. How do we manage global issues like renewable energy or disarmament without causing further damage? Students will use critical and creative thinking to engage with the contradictions of justice that emerge when case studies are analyzed through environmental, cultural, and material frameworks of geography. This course uses neuroinclusive pedagogy. Fall or Spring
