HIST 348 - Castles and Cathedrals 1.00
Castles and cathedrals are the most recognizable features of medieval civilization. They were symbols of power, feats of engineering, and expressions of fear and hope. This course will emphasize how complex these buildings were, and how many different meanings were (and still are) read into them by their builders, their users, and the people who study them. The time period covered will be roughly from Late Rome through the 1500s, but we will also include discussion of castles and cathedrals built after the medieval era, to see how the meaning and memory of these medieval monuments changes over time.
