PHIL 110 - Introduction to Philosophy

1.00

This course explores the original thought and writings of representative philosophers from Plato to Sartre.  It is designed to develop students’ critical capacities as it introduces them to the methods, character and cultural impact of philosophy.  We will examine the nature of the individual and the relationship between the individual and society.  Sample topics include religion, justice, freedom, responsibility, authority, human nature, moral and legal obligation, private property, inequality, violence, civil disobedience, and others.  A central goal is to assist students in developing the intellectual tools to think critically and philosophically about these and related issues for themselves.
