Why do certain stories keep getting retold? And when a story is retold is it the same story or is it different? This course examines tales of love, war, and adventure that were retold throughout the Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance periods, eras during which many of our culture’s most important stories took shape. We will investigate the ways these stories changed, the ways they didn’t, and what these retellings can tell us about continuities and discontinuities among Ancient, Medieval, and Renaissance cultures.
