PG 281 - Food Politics and Policy in America

1.00

Food Politics and Policy in America provides an overview of domestic food policy and the politics surrounding it. This course surveys the history of food policy in America, exploring the role of “focusing events” and regulatory actors and policy subsystems, particularly bureaucratic institutions like the USDA and FDA. The influence of social movements and market-based solutions upon food policy in the United States is also discussed. The course will consider how American government policy affects food safety, food access, food labeling, farms, and social movements, including the “good food” movement, eating local, and ethical eating. Though the focus of the course is upon American food policymaking, some comparative explorations are provided. No prerequisites. Gen Ed Competency: Listen, Imagine, and Understand
