MUS 351 - Analysis of Music in Film 1.00
This course explores the effect of music in film, largely concentrating on how the various elements of music itself—harmony, melody, tempo, instrumentation, and timbre—are important to how the music can support a scene’s dialogue, action, atmosphere, or emotional content. Analysis will focus mostly on the symphonic score (“original score”, “original soundtrack”) but will also cover other topics, particularly the use and effect of song in diegetic and non-diegetic contexts. Ability to read music is not required. Prerequisite: ENG 105 . (Alternate years. Offered 2024–25.) Gen Ed Competency: Think Aesthetically.
