REL 280 - Islam in America 1.00
A study of the appearance and spread of Islam in the United States. An historical approach focuses on two paradigms: American Black Religion and Religions of Immigrants. A story of the African Muslims who were brought to America as slaves provides background for the impact Islam had in the articulation of religious identities among black communities in 19th and 20th century society. Attention to the Muslim immigrant community illumines the question of “What is American Islam?” Finally, these American patterns provide contrast to trends found in Muslim immigrant communities in Europe.
