BIOL 358 - Applied Genomics

1.00

An exploration of the techniques used to sequence and analyze genomes. Students will learn the principles behind modern DNA sequencing and methods to explore genome content, organization, and evolution. Students will gain hands-on experience extracting genomic DNA from bacteria and running a nanopore sequencer. Class sequencing data will be used to run bioinformatic programs to assess DNA quality, assemble genomes, build phylogenetic trees, and create metabolic models. Combined lecture and lab course. Prerequisite: BIOL 120.
