PSYC 325 - Mental Health and Well-Being: A Public Health Approach 1.00
Mental health concerns are widespread; data suggest that 50% of individuals worldwide will experience a mental health disorder in their lifetime. While increasing access to mental health services for individuals is critical, the need for mental health treatment far exceeds capacity. Population based, public health approaches that emphasize prevention and early intervention are needed. This course will provide students with an overview of mental and behavioral disorders from a population perspective. Topics covered will include the epidemiology of mental and behavioral health conditions, risk and protective factors for these problems, and population-level prevention and intervention programs and policies designed to improve mental health and well-being. The course will highlight illustrative mental and behavioral concerns such as depression, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and dementia. Prerequisites: C- or better in PSYC 110 and sophomore, junior, or senior standing.
