ASTR 491 Directed Readings




This course allows qualified students to undertake an in-depth, individually-supervised program of reading on a focused topic of special interest that is not available through regular course offerings. Under the guidance of a faculty member, the student will select a topic, develop a comprehensive reading list typically including primary literature and scholarly sources, and engage in regular discussions with their instructor to explore the material. The course is designed to provide an opportunity for a deep, intellectual survey of a specific academic area. Evaluation is based on criteria established in advance with the supervising instructor and may include a term paper, presentations, or other significant scholarly work.

Prerequisite(s): Enrollment is typically restricted to junior or senior majors and requires advance consultation with and permission from the supervising faculty member and, in some cases, the department chair.
