ECON 282 Global Poverty
This course introduces the nature and incidence of poverty around the world and examines the underlying causes of, and potential solutions to, persistent poverty. The study builds on economics foundations and draws heavily on empirical evidence to complement the analyses. The central aim is to gain a deeper understanding of: (i) why upward economic mobility is often limited for the extreme poor; (ii) the ways in which economic, geopolitical, and institutional structures can impede poverty alleviation; and (iii) the types of interventions that have often been effective in the fight against poverty around the world.
