EDUC 490 Independent Study
This course provides an opportunity for advanced and highly motivated students, typically juniors or seniors, to engage in self-directed learning and research on a topic not covered in the regular curriculum. Working in close consultation with a faculty supervisor, the student will develop and execute a substantial project.
The nature of the work varies by department but generally involves an in-depth investigation of a specific subject, which may include original experimental work in a lab or in the field, a comprehensive literature review, the creation of a significant artistic work, or an applied project. Students are expected to take the initiative in defining the scope of their study, developing a research plan and bibliography, and producing a final tangible outcome, such as a major research paper, a detailed report, or a portfolio of work.
