ENG 348 The British Romantics
An overview of major themes of the Romantic period (1789-1825), including poetic and political revolutions, the preeminence of the imagination, and the valorization of the natural world. Texts include an array of poetry and prose by the six major Romantic poets (Blake, William Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Percy Shelley, and Keats) and two important writers of prose (Dorothy Wordsworth and Mary Shelley). Class time is divided between paying close attention to individual texts, and considering larger trajectories within and between the works of the writers studied.
