GREE 330 Readings in Greek Prose and Poetry

These advanced Greek courses examine an author, genre, or topic. Students will gain experience in different dialects, periods, mentalities, and issues in both prose and poetry. Careful study and close readings will advance the students’ ability to read Greek and analyze its syntax, art, and cultural significance. Students will learn to track major themes, traditions, and stylistic developments between authors of the same genres (e.g., Aeschylus and Euripides) and over time (Herodotus and Polybius, Lysias and Demosthenes). Students gain appreciation of the special opportunities and constraints of poetry and prose (e.g., metrics and rhetorical tropes). Variable content: may be repeated as needed for credit and major/minor requirements.
