HIST 370 B Topics: American Revolution
Examining the American Revolution and the US as a New Nation, we will consider many questions, including the following:
Prelude to Revolution: In 1763, most North American British colonists were happy to be ”Englishmen.” After all, the English people were the freest in the world. Yet, 13 years later, some of these same colonists pledged “[their] lives, [their] fortunes, and [their] sacred honor” to Independence. What happened over those 13 years to change their position? War for Independence: Great Britain had massive advantages over the Americans (Army, Navy, National Government). Why did the British lose/Why did the Americans win? How radical was the Revolution for white men, women, enslaved people, and Native Americans? New Nation: By 1787 George Washington and other leaders feared their experimental Republic would soon fail. Why? How did the Constitutional Convention delegates address those concerns? It was unlikely nine states would ratify the proposed Constitution; what compromise saved it?
