DATA 300 1 Social, Ethical and Cultural Impacts of Big Data
This course introduces students to the social and cultural impacts of big data, in addition to the ethical questions surrounding its collection, use, and dissemination. We will study questions such as: how should we understand the traditional right to privacy in the context of increased surveillance? What should companies be allowed to do with the personal information they collect? How has research using big data shifted our understandings of human behavior? How is big data used to make decisions in government, industry, and commerce? What kinds of conclusions can we draw from large data sets and how should these conclusions be disseminated to the general public?
