PG 300 39 African American Politics

The objective of this course is to provide students with an overview of the relationship between African Americans and the American political system. Students will become acquainted with issues of leadership, representation, identity, and empowerment as it pertains to the African American experience (and to a lesser extent, to other racial and ethnic minorities in America). This course provides students with structured opportunities to consider the issues challenging both scholars and politically interested citizens. This course encourages the development of critical thinking skills and academic skills through in-class participation, exams, and short writing assignments. Examinations are formatted to test students on concepts and scholarly arguments. Upon completion of this course, students will: appreciate the role African Americans have played in the American political system; develop a deeper understanding of African American political participation and behavior; appreciate and value different perspectives, and understand different sides of arguments without judgement; be more comfortable expressing their thoughts; understand and appreciate the material and concepts learned and go out in the world to become active citizens, through voting, and paying attention to the political issues of their time; understand the systemic study of human behavior and participation in politics.
