SOAN 280 Social Theory

This course provides an overview of the most influential modern and contemporary social theorists, and their ways of seeing how societies work and how they change. In addition to the works of the founders of sociology and anthropology, we read contemporary theorists and discuss their views on social harmony and conflict, social inequality, the relations between the individual and society, and social change. We explore the contributions of theorists of class, gender, and race, as well as critiques from theorists outside of North America and Europe. By studying and analyzing theoretical texts, students learn how to develop concepts and theories, and think in a consistent and critical way about society.
