Pre-Optometry Major

Advisor—Dr. Gatz, Zoology

The pre-optometry major is designed to meet the requirements of most optometry schools although some schools require additional courses so students interested in optometry should work with the optometry advisor to assure that they complete all of the necessary coursework for the schools of their choice. It is also strongly recommended that students meet the requirements of some departmental major as well so that they have greater depth in one area in case their interests change.

Some colleges of optometry may require additional courses. Sometimes these are non-specific and would be met by our distribution requirements. Other times these are quite specific and may include some or all of the following:

ZOOL 325 Human Physiology

ZOOL 329 Human Anatomy

CHEM 341 Biochemistry II

ENG 260 Writing Essays or ENG 265 Elements of Style and Rhetoric or ENG 310 Writing for the Workplace or some similar English composition class
