Music Minor

Two minors are offered, one focusing on performance, the other on the academic study of music.

Requirements: Music—Performance: 5 units
Declaration of the minor and acceptance into the program is based on the recommendation of the applied instructor. Requirements:
- 100-level applied lessons for 6 semesters. A performance jury is required at the end of each semester of study.
- 6 semesters of a large ensemble (MUSP 001 , MUSP 002 , or MUSP 005 ), depending on instrument
- 1 unit comprised of MUS 155 plus either MUS 156 or MUS 165
- 1 unit of elective study, which can be in academic or applied music courses.
The performance minor must be declared by the first semester of the second year. Transfer students should speak to the department chair about possible transferable credit from their previous institution. Lesson fees are waived for 100-level lessons. Students electing the 200-level lessons will be charged 50% of the semester fee. NOTE: Failure to complete the minor will result in all previously waived fees being charged to the student’s account prior to graduation.
Requirements: Music—Academic: 5 units
Five units are required:
The declaration for the academic minor may be submitted upon completion of two units of music study. For students taking applied lessons, lesson fees will be waived only for the semesters being applied to the minor (maximum total of 1 unit). Students will be responsible for fees for any additional semesters of study. Courses taken credit/no entry may not be applied to the music minor.
