CLAS 310 - Archaic and Classical Greece

A comprehensive lecture course that considers the history and literature of the ancient Greeks, from the dawn of Minoan culture in Crete through the rise of Macedon in the fourth century B.C.  The world of the Mycenaean Bronze Age, of Homer and Hesiod and the great lyric poets, leads on to the Dark Ages, the Archaic Period, and the glory of classical Athens with the splendid tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, and the choral odes of Pindar.  Close consideration of the Persian Wars and the monumental struggle between Athens and Sparta in the Peloponnesian War, through the pages of the histories of Herodotus and Thucydides.  Together with CLAS 319 this course offers a complete introduction in survey to the world of the ancient Greeks.  Fall (Group III)
