WGS 353 - Black Sexual Politics

1.0

This course will explore the role and relationship of gender and sexuality in contemporary racism and anti-racist Black politics. Gender and sexual stereotypes have long been used to justify racism, and as a result, these stereotypes have often hindered African American resistance to racism. Since the turn of the twenty-first century, feminist and queer scholars of color have noted the evolving and increasing emphasis placed on gender and sexual differences to propagate “new” forms of racism. Therefore, this course will pay particular attention to Black identity, specifically exploring the question of what Black bodies or embodiments are deemed legitimate or illegitimate, both within broader society and within Black communities, and to what political effect?
