ART 250 - Imagining the Americas: Wondrous Animals, Monstrous Plants and Sacred Geographies

1.0

Immediately after conquest, there were efforts on both sides of the Atlantic to make the Americas visually intelligible. Indigenous and European peoples systematically illustrated animals, plants, and maps in paintings, manuscripts, woodcuts and engravings. This course will focus on Early Modern (1400-1750 AD) illustrations of the landscape and ecology of the Americas, examining how images, ideas and organisms travelled across the ocean and ultimately helped define power relationships, global economies, and the newly emerging fields of science.
