ART 355 Photography I

The objective of this course is to build a foundation of knowledge of photography as a creative artistic medium. The course places emphasis on establishing an understanding of photography as a medium with unique aesthetic and physical qualities. Class instruction and assignments will be geared toward exploring those qualities. To this end, we will explore “ways of seeing” with our cameras as a means to bring complexity, in both form and content, into our photographs.  In addition to a sustained focus on digital photography we will explore analog approaches to the medium, with the intention of gaining a broad understanding of both historic and contemporary photographic processes. The course will consist of image lectures, student presentations, class discussions and critiques, individual feedback sessions, along with technical instruction – within the digital realm but also including historic/analog film base photography.
