WLC 310 Special Topics in Puerto Rican Literature and Culture
This course examines how Puerto Rican writers, artists, and cultural figures have brought visibility to Puerto Rico’s culture, history, and political situation both on the island and globally. Their creative works will be studied within a cultural context and in dialogue with one another, as well as with critical essays, historical texts, music, and visual art. Topics to be discussed include cultural identity, migration, gentrification, linguistic negotiation between Spanish and English, globalization, and the erasure or displacement of local culture. Texts and cultural productions discussed in this class will allow students to reflect on how Puerto Rican identity is expressed, contested, and reimagined across genres and media. The course will be taught in English.
