HIST 324 A - China and the West This seminar examines the relations between China and the West. While certain attention is given to Sino-Western contact before modern times, the course focuses on China’s response to the West since the Opium War (1839-1842). Issues covered include the coming of the West, Western imperialism, Western impact, China’s nationalism, and the various roles that the West has played in China’s modernization.
