The history and development of early Christianity on the African continent prior to the Muslim Conquests. Informed by the study of the primary sources-both literary and archaeological-the course will examine the major figures and debates that shaped African Christian identity, theology, and practice in its three epicenters: Egypt, North Africa, and Ethiopia. Attention will also be given to the impact of developments in Africa on Christianity as a whole.
