CMLT 200 2 - Graphic and Experimental Novels of the Contemporary Middle East 1.00
The realm of literary production in the Middle East has seen a dramatic shift in recent years toward a visual paradigm shaped by the language of blogs, comics, street art, and film. The literature emerging from this confluence of word and image suggests a new interface between authors and their ever changing social and political realities. Throughout this course we will read, view, and discuss graphic and experimental novels from Egypt, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Algeria, and France. We will also be considering how iconic images circulate between the page and other public contexts such as graffiti and the iconography of protest and resistance. Students in this course will hone close visual reading skills alongside cultural and historical knowledge related to the themes of memory, trauma, exile, and revolution in a Middle Eastern context.
