Fine Arts, BFA with Licensure to Teach Art in Grades K-12 Major

BFA Requirements

17 to 22 courses. These shall include foundation courses ART 110 , ART 111 , ART 112 , ART 113 , and ART 351 ; studio course ART 353 ; and upper level art history ART 345 or ART 347 ; two 2D studio courses from among ART 353 , ART 354 , ART 355 , ART 356 ; two 3D studio courses from among ART 358 , ART 359 , ART 360 ; at least two additional art history courses; and at least one additional drawing or figure drawing course. In addition, each BFA candidate takes at least two upper levels of the same two-dimensional or three-dimensional studio area of concentration. A minimum of four drawing and/or figure drawings courses is required of the student who chooses drawing for his/her studio concentration. The declaration of major form will be submitted upon completion of ART 110 , ART 111 , ART 112 , ART 113 and ART 351 by the end of the sophomore year, after being accepted into the program. Courses taken credit/no entry may not be applied toward the major. All candidates for the BFA degree must complete the following distribution requirements (see REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DEGREES and DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS ): any three units from Group I , one unit from Group II , two units from Group III , and one unit from outside the fine arts department in Group IV . There is no language requirement for those in the BFA program. Art education course, ART 302 , and credits awarded for an apprenticeship/internship cannot be counted among the seventeen basic units required for the BFA degree.

Major with License to Teach Art in Grades Pre K-12

Completion of 11.5 additional courses to include ART 302 , EDUC 110 , EDUC 251 , EDUC 369, EDUC 370 , EDUC 377 , EDUC 471 , EDUC 472 , EDUC 473 , EDUC 474 , and two diversity courses. EDUC 110 and EDUC 251 can count as two of the Group I requirements.

To qualify as a candidate for Phi Beta Kappa, students choosing the BFA degree must complete all additional distribution requirements as stated under REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL DEGREES and DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS.

Students working toward the combined degree can choose to fulfill the departmental and distribution requirements for either the BA degree in another department or the BFA degree.

The combined degree program is a four-year or five-year program that requires a minimum of 17 art courses, 7 distribution requirements and the completion of the major in another department.
