Employee Handbook and Guide (11/2024)

Message from the President

Welcome to Ohio Wesleyan University and the Bishop Family!

As a member of the OWU Community, you play a critical role in the University’s vital mission to transform the lives of our students as we work collectively to prepare them to be productive, engaged, and successful learners, leaders, and world-changers.

Every employee – in every role throughout the University – plays an important part in helping our students to thrive, serving at times as a patient mentor, well-intended disciplinarian, caring friend, experienced protector, and, sometimes, even a surrogate family member. I am grateful for all you will do to ensure that each student has a clear opportunity to persist to graduation.

As your employer, Ohio Wesleyan is committed to providing you with the environment and support you need to utilize your talents and potential to their fullest. This handbook will help you understand our commitment to you, our expectations from you, and our unwavering dedication to our students.

In addition to this document, I also urge you to read our Guiding Principles and Community Standards. As you will learn, Ohio Wesleyan values the interests and concerns of all members of our community, honors the commitments we make, and respects and appreciates every person.

And, as Community Standard No. 2 states, in our work for the University, we always start from a position of “How can I help?” In that spirit, if I can help you settle in, or if you need assistance from the Human Resources team, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Finally, I encourage new staff members to connect with the OWU Staff Council, and faculty members should review the recently revised OWU Faculty Handbook.

You are an important member of the Bishop Family, and I am excited to see all that you will accomplish in your new journey here.

Welcome!

Sincerely,
Matt

Matthew P. vandenBerg, Ed.D.
